A Comparative Study of Piroxicam and Sulindac in the Treatment ofChronic Disorders

Abstract
Thirty patients with rheumatoid arthritis(15 in each group) and 10 patients of osteoarthritis(5 in each group) were studied in an open comparative trial of piroxicam 20mg o.d. and sulindac 150mg b.i.d. for four weeks. Evaluations of various disease variables were carried out at baseline and every two weeks. Pain on movement and at rest are rated on a visual analog scale. Swelling and tenderness at affected site were rated on 5-point scales. Overall assessment at the end of four weeks were rated as excellent, good, fair or poor.
Piroxicam was far better than sulindac in every aspect.
Percent of reduction of spontaneous pain is 71. 5¡¾2.1 by piroxicam and 40.6¡¾4.8 by sulindac. (p<0.01) The reduction of intensity of pain on movement is 60.7¡¾2.2 by piroxicam and 40.7¡¾3.2 by sulindac. (p<0. 01) Swelling and tenderness are more rapidly subsided by piroxicam than by sulindac.
The overall assessment after four weeks of treatment show far superior improvement with piroxicam than sulindac by both investigators and patients opinions.
Side effects were seen in 5 patients in the piroxicam group and 10 patients in the sulindac group.
All these side effects were minor digestive trouble, and no case was the interruption of treatment necessary.
